Purple Japanese Barberry is a dense deciduous shrub with thin branches and ovate, red leaves. The leaves turn purple in autumn. Some leaves turn into thin thorns. It has yellow to reddish flowers in clusters. These provide a great source of food for bees. The fruits that develop in the fall are glossy red, oblong berries that remain on the branches through the winter. The mature shrub reaches a height of 2 to 3 meters and grows at a moderate rate. It thrives in sunny, semi-shady locations and on dry, nutrient-rich soil. If the shrub is in more shade, the leaves turn green. It tolerates wind and air pollution well, making it suitable for planting along industrial areas and busy roads.

Flowering hedges are pruned only enough to encourage more abundant flowering and to rejuvenate the plant. Heavy pruning of flowering hedges is not recommended, as such plants are not designed to change shape.
