Narrow-leaved laurel ‘Otto Luyken’ is a slow-growing shrub with densely branched leaves. The bush is wider and slightly shorter than most other cherry laurel varieties. Leaves are shiny dark green, up to 10 cm long. The mature shrub grows to a height of 1,2-1,5 meters. It thrives in sunny, semi-shady and shady locations. It tolerates shade from larger trees. It thrives in moist soil but is also drought and smog tolerant. It is hardy, tolerates subalpine climates well and is also resistant to salt spray atmospheres. It blooms in May and June, sometimes again in autumn. The rich, fragrant flowers are white and stand in inflorescences about 12 cm long. Shrubs attract bees and birds.
A laurel hedge can be beautifully complemented with a combination of photinia.

1st step

Dig a channel where you want to plant hedges or planting holes for individual seedlings at the desired spacing. The hole should be at least a third larger than the plant’s root ball. Therefore, if the quality of the existing soil is poor, the planting hole should be even larger.

2nd step

Cover the seedling with soil. If the existing soil is of good quality, you can use your own or add some new soil. Press the soil down well and water the seedling well. We also recommend installing an irrigation hose.

3rd step

It is advisable to fertilize the plants once a year. You can either sprinkle fertilizer over it or dig it partially underground.

Recommended planting spacing:

Plant 2 seedlings 1 meter apart for seedlings larger than 100 cm. Seedlings smaller than 100 cm should be planted 2,5* to 3 seedlings at a distance of 1 meter. * Plant 5 seedlings 2 meters apart.

Pruning

Pruning

For smaller plants, only cut off the tops to ensure faster branching and shrub thickening. At the same time, they can be formed into the desired shape. When the plants reach the desired height, prune them back enough to maintain the height. Laurel bushes have 2 to 3 growth cycles per year. This means that they develop new leaves and after each cycle the hedges of these strains can be trimmed.
