Copper Beech is a deciduous tree with dark, reddish-purple leaves. It blooms in May, but the flowers are almost inconspicuous. The small, bristly, brown fruits are edible. Its foliage falls slowly, sometimes the dried leaves remain on the branches until new leaves begin to sprout. The beech grows slowly and reaches a height of 25 to 30 meters as a mature plant. It forms a strong shade that makes it difficult for other plants to grow underneath. It is hardy, tolerates subalpine climates well and is smog-resistant. It thrives in sunny and semi-shady locations and is suitable for both dry and moist soil. By pruning, the plant can be brought into any shape and different hedge heights can be achieved. Birds and small mammals like to visit the beech hedges and feed on the beechnuts.
