The European beech is a deciduous tree with dark green leaves with wavy edges. These turn orange-yellow in autumn. It flowers in May and June, but the flowers are almost inconspicuous. The small, bristly, brown fruits are edible. The beech grows moderately and reaches a height of 25 to 30 meters as a mature plant. It is hardy, tolerates subalpine climates well and is smog resistant. It thrives in both sunny and shady locations and is suitable for both dry and moist soils. By pruning, the plant can be brought into any shape and different hedge heights can be achieved. Birds and small mammals like to visit the beech hedges and feed on the beechnuts.
