FIELD MAPLE – Acer campestre

The field maple is a deciduous tree with an irregularly shaped crown. The palmate leaves are bronze initially, turning green in summer and turning golden yellow in fall. The maple grows moderately and reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters when mature. It tolerates pruning well and can be formed into any shape to achieve different hedge heights. It thrives in moist, wet soil and in sunny to shady locations. It tolerates poor, dry soil, heat, salt in the soil in winter and smog and is a very good windbreak. In April, the small flowers provide a great food source for bees, butterflies and other insects. The brown winged fruits, called samaras, are a delicacy for birds.
