The Irish yew tree is narrow, upright and columnar, becoming broader as it matures. It grows slowly. The dark green needles are arranged in a radial pattern on the branch and are soft to the touch. The mature shrub reaches a height of 5 to 8 meters. The plant is resistant to smog and adapted to the subalpine climate. The flowers attract bees and the shrub with its red fruits is a good host for birds. All parts of the yew except the red seed coat are poisonous to humans.
