Japanese Spindle is a slow growing evergreen shrub with an upright and dense habit. It has large, ovate, dark green leaves with a serrated edge. The flowers are less showy and greenish white. Orange fruits develop in autumn, hidden in a pink husk. These are a popular food for birds. The mature plant is 3 to 4 meters high and is also suitable for planting on concrete walls or scarps. It tolerates pruning well and thrives in most soil types. It only requires a sufficiently moist substrate that is well drained. It thrives in both full sun and partial shade.
