Photinia is an upright evergreen shrub with lanceolate to elliptical leaves. These are leathery, dark green in colour but bronze to light red when young. In spring it develops white flowers that attract bees. It tolerates hot climates and dry soils, but also thrives in wet soils and in subalpine winters. The mature shrub is 3 to 5 meters high. It thrives in sunny and partially shaded locations. The photinia hedge is beautifully complemented by a combination of laurel trees.

For smaller plants, only cut off the tops to ensure faster branching and shrub thickening. At the same time, they can be formed into the desired shape. When the plants reach the desired height, prune them back enough to maintain the height. Photinia shrubs have 2 to 3 growth cycles per year. This means that they develop new leaves and after each cycle the hedges of these strains can be trimmed.
Dig a channel where you want to plant hedges or planting holes for individual seedlings at the desired spacing. The hole should be at least a third larger than the plant’s root ball. Therefore, if the quality of the existing soil is poor, the planting hole should be even larger.
Cover the seedling with soil. If the existing soil is of good quality, you can use your own or add some new soil. Press the soil down well and water the seedling well. We also recommend installing an irrigation hose.
It is advisable to fertilize the plants once a year. You can either sprinkle fertilizer over it or dig it partially underground.
