The conifer has characteristics similar to those of the Hicksii species. It is mainly columnar, but narrower and more erect. The needles are dark green, up to 3 cm long and soft to the touch. The yew grows slowly and reaches a height of 3 to 5 meters when fully grown. The yew ‘Hillii’ thrives on both moist and dry soil and is more suitable for sunny and partially shaded locations. The shrub does not develop red berries.
