This species of yew is a strictly columnar shrub with dense upright branches. The dark green needles are broadly lined with yellow gold and are soft to the touch. The mature shrub reaches a height of 4 to 6 meters. The plant is resistant to smog and adapted to the subalpine climate. The flowers attract bees and the shrub with its red fruits (usually a female plant) is a good host for birds. All parts of the yew except the red seed coat are poisonous to humans.
