The Pančić spruce is a conifer with a narrow pyramidal crown that is thinner than the Norway spruce. The branches are short and point upwards towards the top. The green needles are silver-grey on the underside. It has downward-pointing cones 5-6 cm in size. They are purple from the start and turn dark brown as they mature. The Pančić spruce is a medium to fast growing tree that can reach 15 to 25 meters in height. It thrives in sunny, semi-shady and shady locations as well as on wet and dry soil. It needs medium-nutrient rich soil to grow. It tolerates cold and polluted air well, so it is suitable for planting along industrial areas and busy roads. It is preferred by birds, owls and small mammals. This spruce variety is suitable for hedges with a more natural appearance. After pruning, the shape is less defined than that of Norway spruce and is more organic.
