Portuguese laurel has elliptical leaves, smaller than those of Prunus lusitanica, shiny and dark green, slightly lighter underneath. Young twigs have a contrasting purple color. The shrub grows more slowly, the structure is more compact and conical in nature. The mature plant is 3 to 6 meters high. The small white flowers, which open in June, are creamy white and make classic 10-12 cm long inflorescences densely distributed throughout the bush. The laurel thrives on moist soil and, thanks to its leathery leaves, is wind-resistant, including sea breezes. It just needs protection from cold, dry winds. It is hardy and tolerates subalpine climates well.
A laurel hedge can be beautifully complemented with a combination of photinia.

1st step

Dig a channel where you want to plant hedges or planting holes for individual seedlings at the desired spacing. The hole should be at least a third larger than the plant’s root ball. Therefore, if the quality of the existing soil is poor, the planting hole should be even larger.

2nd step

Cover the seedling with soil. If the existing soil is of good quality, you can use your own or add some new soil. Press the soil down well and water the seedling well. We also recommend installing an irrigation hose.

3rd step

It is advisable to fertilize the plants once a year. You can either sprinkle fertilizer over it or dig it partially underground.

Pruning

Pruning

For smaller plants, only cut off the tops to ensure faster branching and shrub thickening. At the same time, they can be formed into the desired shape. When the plants reach the desired height, prune them back enough to maintain the height. Laurel bushes have 2 to 3 growth cycles per year. This means that they develop new leaves and after each cycle the hedges of these strains can be trimmed.
